Movie-based video games are, most of the times, forgettable at best – not that the situation was any different the other way around. But while video game movies are still being made and are being remembered for their failure to appeal to larger audiences (except maybe for the Resident Evil series that has proven to be quite successful), video games based on movies often don’t make it through planning, wither in development hell or get outright cancelled. Which is often a pity, considering how promising their story is. The history of gaming is filled with stories untold and levels unplayed in these video games that were promising but never saw the light of day.
Highlander: The Game

It is a pity that the Highlander series with all its mythology, its many side stories, animated features, and such, never made it to the world of video games, leaving fans of the franchise with nothing but a recent video slot machine adaptation at https://www.wildjackcasino.com/. Especially since the game announced to be under development in 2008 sounded promising enough: it was a third-person action game focusing on swordplay and decapitation.
According to the plans, it would’ve focused on Owen MacLeod, an ancestor of Connor (Highlander) and Duncan (Highlander: The Series) MacLeod who learns about his inability to die in the aftermath of a gladiator fight in ancient Rome that he loses. Upon revival, he is prepared for the upcoming fight by Methos, the first Immortal ever born. His nemesis is too strong for him to defeat, so he has to go on a quest to recover a magical stone scattered all over the world. The game would’ve taken its players across many lifetimes worth of history, from ancient Rome to modern-day New York.
Developer: Obsidian Entertainment
The Alien lore speaks of two parallel games being developed back in 2009: Gearbox’s Aliens: Colonial Marines and Obsidian’s Alien: Crucible. The latter would’ve been a team-based third-person role-playing game following a group of workers on the planet Caldera trying to survive the Xenomorph infestation of the colony.
Unfortunately, as Sega decided to go with Gearbox’s game after “carefully considering the type of Aliens game to release”, suspending development of the RPG indefinitely. Which is a pity, considering that the game would’ve brought some much-needed drama (involving facehuggers) into the world of video games.
Gotham by Gaslight
개발자: Day 1 Studios

Gotham by Gaslight is not as much a video game based on a movie but rather on the comic book with the same title by Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola. It would’ve told the story of Bruce Wayne set in the Victorian era, where the caped crusader would’ve taken on perhaps the most famous criminal in history, Jack the Ripper. Unfortunately, THQ failed to secure the rights to the property, which led to the cancellation of the game in the early stages of its development.
The only thing remaining of the game is some leaked concept art and gameplay footage, showing the steampunk look of the game – which makes us feel sorry for the game’s demise.
